Had a look in the attic.

I went up into the attic today. I'd been putting it off because I expected to come back down with another expensive problem. Given the state of some of the rooms, I thought the roof would be worse.

From what I could see, it's held up fairly well. There's an old stain near one end, but the wood there felt dry. I couldn't see any daylight through it, and nothing looked obviously rotten. I'll still get someone who knows roofs to have a look. For now, I'm a little less worried about it.

I took a broom and a couple of bags up with me and cleared some of the rubbish around the hatch. Mostly scraps of wood and bits of cardboard that fell apart when I picked them up. There were loose nails mixed in with the dust, so I spent a while picking those out. I only cleaned the part I could reach comfortably. There's more further back.

There's very little insulation up there. What is there looks thin and uneven, with whole patches left bare. I hadn't planned on doing anything about it yet, but now I'm wondering whether it ought to come before more of the downstairs work. I'm already paying to keep that little bedroom warm, and we haven't had the worst of the weather.

I need to measure the attic and work out what it would cost. Also how many trips it would take to get everything home. The water heater used up more of this week's money than I'd intended, so I'd like to have an actual figure before I buy anything else.

I left the broom beside the hatch. I'll go back up tomorrow with the tape measure and finish clearing enough space to see what I'm dealing with. I meant to get the measurements today, but by the time I came down I wanted a shower and something to eat.
