NEW!
Packing for longer.
By the time I got back from the last trip, I'd been away for nearly two days. It hadn't felt that long. With the watch stopped and no daylight, I couldn't tell how much time I'd spent walking or sleeping.
I've decided to take enough supplies for a week. I don't know whether I'll stay that long. I just don't want to get somewhere and have to leave because I've run out of food or batteries.
I've been sorting everything on the kitchen floor. Peanut butter, crackers, nuts, canned food I can eat cold. I've bought a foam sleeping pad as well. The sleeping bag was warm enough once I settled into it, but I could feel the cold floor underneath me.
The water is going to be the worst part to carry. I'll make a few trips and leave supplies at the bottom of the stairs before I try to go any further. Food and spare batteries there too. I can use that spot to sleep and repack instead of carrying everything through every passage.
I'm leaving the lamps along the corridor switched off this time. I've bought reflective tape to put beside the chalk arrows. I only need to see the next mark when my light reaches it. Keeping the whole route lit used up too many batteries.
Three lights for myself, spare bulbs, and the same kind of batteries wherever possible. The camera will come with me, but I'll save the filming for junctions and anything different. I've got enough tape of myself walking.
I've started drawing out the route I remember in a notebook. It gets vague after the first few turns. Next time I'll number the junctions as I reach them and write down which way I go. I'm taking another watch, too. I still haven't worked out what happened to the first one.
There's very little room left to walk around the kitchen now. I keep picking things up, deciding they're too heavy, then putting them back because I might need them.
I want to get past the point where I turned around. After all that walking, I still know almost nothing. Next time I want to find at least one thing I haven't seen before, something I can examine instead of another corner to look around.
I don't want to come home with the same questions again.
