NEW!
Stayed the night.
I finally slept at the house last night. I brought the mattress over yesterday and put it straight on the bedroom floor. The bed frame can wait until I have someone to help me with it. For now I've got a sleeping bag and a pillow, which was enough after carrying things upstairs all afternoon.
It was good to finish working and just stay here. I ate downstairs, washed up what I'd used, and went to bed fairly early.
The wind picked up during the night. I woke a few times to the windows rattling, and there were creaks from the floor and somewhere up in the roof. About what you'd expect from a house this old in that weather. I went back to sleep without much trouble.
The windows need attention soon, though. They close, but there's still enough play in them for the wind to shake them in their frames. One in the bedroom was particularly noisy. I'll have a look at the catches and see where the movement is coming from. I'd like to get that sorted before we get a colder night.
This morning I made a decent mug of black coffee and had some toast with cheese. I'd brought a small can of corn with me, so I had that too, with a little pepper. I remembered to bring the can opener this time. I ate at the kitchen table while I worked out what to tackle first.
I'm going to spend today on the upstairs bathroom. Being able to shower here would make staying over a lot easier. I can put up with most of the mess, but I'd like to wash properly after a day of clearing it out.
The old electric water heater isn't giving me much more than lukewarm water. I don't know how old it is. The label is worn and I haven't found any paperwork for it, so I'm expecting I'll have to replace it. I'd like to have somebody check it before I spend the money, in case it can be repaired.
I'll head to Home Depot this afternoon and see what they have and what installation would cost. Before I go, I need to write down the measurements and whatever I can still read on the label. I've already made enough trips where I got to the store without the information I needed.
